I saw an interesting bit of commentary about that. The recent ban included the threat to US personnel that continuing to work in China would result in their loss of US citizenship. The commentator pointed out that in the event of war between the US and China any US citizens in China at that time might become hostages... so this condition might be a prophylactic move by the US.
It makes one wonder just how close a war over Taiwan might actually be...
