My main take away from the ABC podcast.
https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/futuretense/rare-earths-and-the-difficulties-of-supply/13686450
The discussion covered two main points...The word 'Dubbo' is mentioned once.
- Rare Earth mining is dirty - There is much discussion regarding how dirty is the processing of the RE ore and metal production. Although I suspect ASM processes will involve some 'dirty' aspects, the reduction in energy required in the metallisation process (up to 70%) will help make ASM stand out in the RE metals space. Hopefully ASM can also improve the efficiency and environmental impact aspects of the ore processing.
- China's dominance in the global RE market - The discussion indicated that China controls app 80% of RE metal supply. It was suggested that Japan and Germany are particularly aware of the disadvantage in which they find themselves. It was suggested that both Japan and Germany are likely sources of funding for the development of non Chinese sources of RE metal supply.
