I remember a statement from an authority on alcoholism.
It went something like this:

"None of us are ever totally Saintly or totally Evil, but always both."

(I think it was George Vaillant "The Natural History of Alcoholism")
Explained an existential position from an unlikely source.

The potential to transcend our lower nature exists in all,but we can descend
rapidly also.

Bit like the Market really.
