There's often been the excuse of religion killing more people than war; the implied lesson that religion is a mass killer.. a kind of polar opposite to "guns don't kill people, people do".
Be interesting to get some comparative numbers of religious cleansing on a per capita brand basis. My bet is Islam would be top of the list followed by the Church of Rome, but plunder, fiefdom and expansionist territorial/empire wars would still outnumber religious efforts by a country mile.
