I know this is meant to ridicule religious belief but in a way it is a kind of truth. Now of course there are fundamental religious beliefs that pretty much bring the ridicule down upon themselves because they are in conflict with science, logic and reality.
But, religion had to evolve just as society has, just as law, agriculture, animal husbandry, science, medicine, our bodies, our minds and intellect. Everything is in a continuous evolutionary state unless it is dead.
The very first religious experience may have been no more than an abstract thought, just as the first science might have been banging two rocks together. So from moving from an abstract thought to worshipping a rock was a big deal. Moving all the way to understanding that the sun was the source of life was another big deal. To then understand that there was a force beyond even the structure of the universe was quite a big step.
So what might growing up really look like, accepting that universes just form from nothing, that fixed universal laws behave so precisely just because, that life is a byproduct of non-life, that order is an outcome of chaos, that sentience is just something that happens. And yes, we have most definitely moved beyond needing popes and priests and the staggering raft of useless preachers that are like cockroaches, so getting rid of them would be a sign of growing up.
So while I find the cartoon funny and I appreciate you posting it, it may be the best example yet of how religion is progressing and moving to a higher reality because now real religion does not even seperate itself for science. They are both one and the same.
