Michael Peterson. Pyrotechnic Australian regularfooter from Queensland’s Gold Coast; winner of the Australian National Titles in 1972 and 1974; regarded by many as the world’s most advanced high-performance surfer during the mid-’70s. Peterson’s birth (1952) was the result of a gang-rape. He was raised in the Gold Coast town of Kirra, and brought up by a single mother who worked in the kitchen at a local café.

Incidents of sexual violence against women, specifically involving perpetrators who are not partners, is more than double the global average in Australia and New Zealand, a study finds.
A study released today in the Lancet medical journal says 16.4 per cent of women 15 years old or older in Australia and New Zealand have been the victim of sexual assault by someone who wasn’t their partner (i.e. other family members, friends, strangers). This compares to the global average of 7.2 per cent.

A sex crimes court is one of several measures being considered by the State Government after it was presented with horrifying new rape statistics.
The existence of hundreds of previously unreported gang rapes and child sexual assaults has prompted Attorney-General Bob Debus to appoint a special taskforce that would begin work "as soon as possible" to make it easier for rape victims to give evidence.
