There are 3 main groups in Iraq

The Sunnis

The Shittes

The Kurds

Because most candidates in the election were not known (for security reasons) and as they were not known no one new what they stood for either it is widely expected that those that voted would vote based on cultural and religious lines.

Therefore as the majority of Iraqis are shitte and based on most reports many sunnis did not vote it would be no surprise if shitte based groups end up with the majority of the votes.
