This is always an issue when one person have absolute power for a long time without their citizen allowed to voice their opinion and elect a new leader, you just need to look through the past history and this is the common denominator, power corrupt the longer you have it.
No-one hates Russia but everyone hates Putin and even a majority of his own citizen despise him as their leader but they can't do anything about it. Sure he made Russia a lot wealthier country but only for a selected few who are "Yes" people and who can't given the resources they have. The other nationalist Russian dictator would have if they opened up and sold stuff to the world like Putin did.
