One method for tracing is every post on most forums also contains the posters unique IP address and from that it can be traced back to the computer it came from unless someone has gone to the trouble of masking it, same goes for Facebook and Twitter. I was once told by a forum moderator on Whirlpool forums that is how they determine who is using duplicate sock accounts from their home computers.
