"discrimination" is another word that frequently applies. The Italians and other non English speaking migrants copped their fair share and were called all manner of names when the migrated here in larger numbers after WW2. The Vietnamese also were targeted. Over time this dissipated but not before a lot of sorry happenings occurred. Its fairly common that when people migrate here they are targeted by a minority who feel threatened by cultural and even visual differences. Indigenous Australians probably copped more abuse and discrimination than any group of Australians.
Discrimination laws are necessary to prevent things getting out of hand.
