It's not about being a trader or not, really, except the 30day lockup (although some liquidity is always better than none, regardless of someone's situation). It's that if you buy the shares via a SPP or on the open market, they're te same shares and they have the same effect on the company's future from the view of a long term investor - you're either providing capital directly or reducing the price that the company has to pay for capital by limiting the availability of shares. Both are important.
