It is a shame that Adelaide already has a desalination plant, CCE could have thrown that into the bid as well.

Maybe a network of micro desalination plants spread along the coast using MakWater technology. You can never have too much freshwater in a state as dry as SA. Distributed desalination (in the same was as distributed energy) might be a better way to go than the very expensive and cumbersome centralised desalination models that most states have already built.

Converting excess renewable energy into freshwater is a type of energy storage anyway.

I saw somewhere that hydrogen was mentioned as a possibility for SA as well. Jamie Ally and Tobias Price are hydrogen engineers and still part of the EMC team as far as I know:

Jamie ALLY Director, Energy Made Clean (TREASURER)

"Originally from Canada, Jamie came to Perth as one of the lead engineers on Perth's hydrogen fuel cell bus project. Following the successful completion of that project, Jamie co-founded HAC, a firm specialising in the engineering and commercial development of cleantech projects across Australia. HAC quickly expanded from its Perth offices, establishing offices in Melbourne and Kalgoorlie. In 2011 HAC was acquired by EMC Limited.

Jamie is a Director and General Manager of Engineering at Energy Made Clean (EMC), a front-end developer and engineering service provider for energy generation and energy efficiency projects. EMC's clients include some of Australia's largest corporations, all levels of government, and the Department of Defence. EMC is also actively developing its own portfolio of renewable generation assets.

Jamie holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics). He is a Chartered Engineer and NPER in Australia. He is a registered professional engineer in Canada, and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEG BC). He is pursuing a PhD part-time at Murdoch University, and he is a Director of the Australian Association for Hydrogen Energy.

Jamie has delivered many lectures and seminars on energy technologies. He has published articles in the Journal of Power Sources and the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, and he is a peer-reviewer for the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and other energy-related journals."
