Conergy and Voller have announced a plan to use small fuel cells to buffer the output of renewable solar and wind for small RAPS such as traffic lights and traffic monitors.
Photovoltaics and wind turbines in RAPS applications typically produce an excess of energy over their allocated amount; linking these overproducing but variable generators with a slow-ramping fuel cell almost guarantees wasted energy.
This waste could be avoided if a suitably sized battery in in parallel to act as a large smoothing capacitor between generation and demand.
If available, the VRB-ESS 5 and 10kWhr units would be ideal and would be a good fit to the "Power station in a container" idea. Just adjust the size of the container.
