Future of 'Stink Lake' questioned

The future of Bird Lake — which is to the left of the highway into Port Augusta from Adelaide — was also discussed.
Council's chief executive John Banks previously raised concerns about the lake when it no longer has water from the power station being pumped into it.

"Not only to the aesthetics of the area, but if those lakes were to dry out, there could be problems associated with odours," Mr Banks said.

"I think after accommodating the power station for as long as they have, the people of Port Augusta deserve a good entrance into their city."

At last night's meeting, councillor Mark Myers asked the Alinta representatives what their plans were for what he referred to as "Stink Lake".

Councillor Phillip Brown also implored the company not to walk away from the lake.

Mr Williams said the lake was not on Alinta's property, but the company was looking at options.

"We're certainly aware it's a very sensitive issue," Mr Williams said.

"We're working closely with the council, the Government and other stakeholders to determine the best outcome for that lake going forward."
