ummmm.... yes... you're right, but thats exactly what hydrogen FC cars are!
No manufacturer is making a hydrogen combustion engine! They're all making fuel cells, which power the electric engines.
Its basically replacing a large heavy (~500KG) battery, with a large lightweight H2 fuel tank & a Fuel Cell.
One you plug in to the power point, the other you fill up like a gas car.
One day H2 will be made with green power, then it will be a competition between battery electric cars & Fuel Cell electric cars..... both with their pros and cons.
( I don't have a strong view which is better, just saying its definitely possible)
