Reopening of Ngagane siding approved
An estimated 16 jobs will be created
15 August 2012 | Bruce Douglas
Plans for the reopening of the old Eskom siding in Ngagane have been approved. A bulk email message was distributed on Monday afternoon by Leonie Berjak of Copperleaf Consulting, informing the interested and affected parties of this.
"This is to inform you that the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs has authorised the Ngagane Coal siding on August 10," reads the email.
Reasons for approving the reopening of the siding include the need of transporting coal via rail, minimal environmental impact and favourable outcomes of the public consultation process and environmental impact assessments.
Appeals may be made within 20 days (of August 10). All inquiries must be directed to 033 343 3410, 086 672 1242 (fax), [email protected] (email) or PO Box 519, Hilton 3245 (post).
Previously, Ikwezi Mining applied for rights to reopen the siding, and estimated about 60 000 tonnes of coal could be transported from the siding to other hubs. Predictions were that 16 new jobs would be created, including on-site security.
