Source: Reuters Akoitai said PNG was experiencing a mining renaissance with prospecting on 70 sites and four mines under development, as a world commodities boom sees miners from South Africa, Canada, China and Australia search for gold, copper and silver in the jungle-clad mountains of the South Pacfic island nation. To attract more miners, the government hopes to extend exploration licences from two to five years and Akoitai said he favoured lifting an exploration moritorium on Bougainville island and re-opening the island's Panguna copper mine, one of the world's top mines when it was forced to close due to a secessionist rebellion in 1989. PNG had squandered its good mining reputation in the 1990s, due to political instability and corruption, and no new mines under construction
