Guessing that the American drug companies get the 'spoils' which we,amongst others, then purchase at prices way, way, way above cost price . As if our own pharma companies would be incapable.
Back on the farm aeons ago we found a poppy, in a paddock adjacent the house, with a very pretty pink flower. It was a single, tall plant around a metre high. Dad knew exactly what it was and pulled it out of the ground saying that it was an opium poppy and the police would spot it from the sky. Well I thought we had lived a pretty private life out there in the sticks, but given my father's reaction it seems this wasn't the first poppy and perhaps we'd had a visit from the police before. It was a particularly beautiful flower though. We lived a very, very long way from Tasmania.

Opium poppies,
We used to have them in most of the gardens at the Cessnock Police Boys Club in the '50's '60's.
No one really paid any attention to what they were except being a beautiful flower making a beautiful garden display, and any drugs at the time was cigarettes, alcohol and pharmaceutical stugg like Relaxa Tabs.
