TK has spoken at length about the improvements they've made since the failed trial. I'm no techie but my understanding is they've put in a manual review process prior to getting the samples as well as an automated review that ok's the samples prior to them being used.
This has formed the basis of the cough counting technology currently being used by AZ as it has the ability to better distinguish cough sounds from other sounds.
They've actually done a lot of work behind the scenes to improve the quality of the sample collection so I think your criticism is unfounded. Yep there have been mistakes but there's also been a lot of good work done and still being done.
