TANTALUM, NIOBIUM & TIN POTENTIAL OF MORABISI
NIOBIUM AND ITS MARKET
US$2.2b Niobium market is very special.
- Niobium is used in steel and 7 times more valuable than copper.
- $9 of Niobium added to a car will reduce mass by 100kg.
- Niobium is hard to find and hard to value.
- Currently, there are only three producing Niobium mines in the world producing around 90,000 tonnes a year with a total value of US$2.2 billion.
- Almost all the metal comes from just three mines in Brazil and Canada
- More than 80 percent of global supply comes from one company CBMM (Cia. Brasileira de Metalurgia & Mineracao) in Brazil. CBMM is worth around $13BN and makes around $600MN profit per year.
NIOBIUM POTENTIAL IN MORABISI
As you know GPP has included niobium in their first announcement. They didn't ignore the niobium potential of Morabisi because we already have a lot of niobium together with tantalum in Morabisi. The world's biggest niobium mine (80% of world production) is already in Brasil, South America.
Both tantalum and niobium (and of course lithium) are mostly found together in those type of geological settings. Tantalum is already being mined as COLTAN in 5 areas by the artisanal miners. They will have to stop it when we tell them to stop because it's all ours anymore.
See the Guyana Mining Commission's map below which I gave on my first "My Research Notes on GPP Guyana Morabisi Project" post on Oct. 6. You will see artisanal Coltan mining is market by the government mining authorities. Coltan means Columbium + Tantalum (Columbium is the other name of Niobium).
that means we already have niobium in Morabisi. However we can't know if it would be aconomic to mine or not. It is being mined in Dem.Rep.of Congo in Coltan form, sent to China but they don't extract niobium from those ores. (Coltan from this area is also being sent to China)

See the map below which was giving on the first acquisition announcement on Sept. 20. The areas marked with the green star and bordered by light blue. Those are the areas where tantalum and also niobium is mined by artisanal miners atm. I think all alluvial deposits around the river and creek beds. Those tantalum and niobium on the alluvial deposits are coming from the dykes and outcrops around the area. That is the sources of tantalum, niobium and of course the lithium.
- Rumong-Rumong Workings
- Morabisi Workings
- Robello Creek Workings
- Pilgram Workings
- Kunuballi Creek Workings
It's hard to find the lithium in the alluvial deposits in the river and creek beds other than lake environment, we have to find them in the dykes and outcrops which is all around those workings.
That's what GPP is doing now. That why it is obvious that the initial field work is very encouraging and the potential is confirmed by visual assessment of Brendan Borg (who is now holding his GPP shares), then company exercised the option agreement and spending money by setting up the teams with 5 camps, and Brendan Borg has committed to oversee the project.
THE ABUNDANCE OF TANTALUM IN THE AREA MEANS THAT THE OUTCROPS AND DYKES AROUND THE AREA IS LCT PEGMATITES.
There are two pegmatite types;
1) LCT: Lithium-Cesium-Tantalum enrichment
2) NYF: Niobium, Yttrium, and Fluorine enrichment
As you can see why we are looking for LCT pegmatites because it contains more lithium than niobium.
When there is too much niobium you can't find much lithium.
When there is too much tantalum, you have great chance of finding lithium.
They can be found all together. The ratios of every mineral is important. They all coming to the earth's surface though the fault lines and fractures from the magma. But lithium and tantalum is being at the top.
That's why both in Greenbushes (WA) where the world's biggest tantalum and lithium mine is, and where Pilgangoora region of Pilbara where many explorer and developers are working, there are very big tantalum mines.
GPP CAN ALSO FIND A SIGNIFICANT TIN DEPOSITS IN MORABISI
Tin is actually much better and strategic element than niobium because it has a huge market in the world (350ktpa). You can also see in the Greenbushes and Pilbara regions that there are very good tin mines.
This is another issue. I will leave it for talking later. I talked to the management and learned that they are also looking for tin in the area.
If you want to know more about tin, here is my research notes on KAS thread. There are good ninfo about tin there.
