It may be the case that the radium emitted is oxidised. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium)
It then decays into radon which does not oxidise (as it is an inert gas)
For those that gain from actual research, the decay path of thorium is outlined in the Lynas LAMP RIA, page 41.
It looks like I may have paid a little more attention in High School than some earlier posters.
