CPT Category III code is a temporary code (that doesn’t establish reimbursement / payment) that lasts for 5 years (unless extended) before it sunsets (i.e. becomes archived) if it does not move up to a Category I code.

The aim is to move to CPT Category I code (a higher bar) to be able to get coverage and payment (i.e. reimbursement). My understanding is that the work they are doing with clinical trials and the publication of the positive clinical trial data in peer reviewed journals, as well as disseminating that positive clinical trial data at conferences (such as at the ATS conference) as well as having academic / industry players advocate on 4DX’s behalf, are all part of a calculated plan/strategy to attain the CPT Category I code that will lead to reimbursement discussions with payers.
