Careful. There may not be an election. There's a precedent I believe during the war when FDR stayed in office for 4 terms citing need for national stability and emergency situation.
Obama and McCain might decide to pay off their homes, and withdraw providing the Executive with another term untill all this carnage finishes.
Oh and with regards to the sell off in Europe, Barclays, RBS and Lloyds apparently approached Alistair Darling for a 15 billion pound loan.
