Heap leach is the most likely option PEN will utilise in Karoo for two reasons IMO. The will utilise the final process technology they would have already perfected at Lance. The other is that heap leach is a far lower cost that conventional crush and grind processing, it is why BMN want to utilise it.

It does have a higher Capex and Opex though as you still have to dig it out of the ground and heap it up. You also have the one big environmental concern that is also a rehab cost, is the heap pile which is left in place after mining has finished. There is also the need for containment as heap leach uses chemicals (acids) not used in ISR.

You will forgive me if I am not as excited by heap leach as others are. It is the little bit of greenie inside me coming out. Despite my view, I doubt this process will be of major concern in Karoo.

As well as MPJ PEN has a well known neighbour in Karoo...PDN. I wonder if they are watching events unfold?
