e.g. borrow $100000 today, @ average interest rate of 8%, interest = $8000 (yes some years will be higher, and some years will be lower). Assume return now of $8000, x years down the track borrowed amount still = $100000 (or lower if principle payments made - all in tomorrows dollars) BUT rent is now higher say $12000. So you can see that your borrowed amount has not increased but your returns are increasing. It is simple and how long term wealth is generated.

Okay for the record I am 33, I have a 2 year old child with down syndrome and I earn enough money in my job such that my wife does not have to work at the moment - but you know what she still want's to go out to work "for her own independence" (just like many other women). The traditional roles no longer apply in the modern world we are no longer in the 1950s. Hey my view is that one parent (either wife or father) should stay at home and look after the kids, as I am no fan of the childcare system and think kids do better when raised at home - but you know what I am in the minority with this view and as such it is not reality in the modern world!

I understand the problem, but you will need to educate the vast majority of the Australian population as they are wanting more and more.
