"but mate now answer this question, why would we spend all our lives trying to pay off a house, just so prop investors, and tradies in the building industry can live like kings for doing nothing out of the ordinary?"
The majority of people spend a significant portion of their life paying of a house as for most it is the single largest purchase they will ever make, and it takes time to pay it off. It takes both time and hard work to achieve anything worth while in life!
Yes all property investors live like kings - funny thing is allot of tenants have brand new cars sitting in their driveways while the house owner drives around a second hand car and spends allot of time scrimping and saving to get by to generate wealth for the future.
As for the tradies well they get paid according to their demand. If you don't like their rates start doing things more yourself (I do).

    Seriously nice generalisations though mate!

why should housing sell for double or quadruple what its actually worth?
Have you actually looked into the full cost of building a house? Until then how do you really know what it is actually worth? Just vague generalisations that they are too expensive.
