Rare earth miner Lynas Corporation says it may sell its Crown polymetallic deposit at Mount Weld to Forge Resources, but that any transaction would not be material.
Lynas confirmed a media report that it was in discussions with Forge Resources, an energy and resources explorer, to sell the deposit, part of Lynas's Mt Weld project.
Lynas describes Mt Weld as "the richest known deposit of Rare Earths in the world".
Responding to the report in Fairfax newspapers, Lynas said it "is in discussions regarding a possible transaction concerning the Crown polymetallic deposit at Mt Weld.
"These discussions are incomplete and the board of Lynas is not yet in a position to make a decision," the miner said.
"The board does, however, consider the possible transaction is not a material one for Lynas."
Forge Resources shares entered a trading halt on the Australian stock exchange, the company saying it was "in the process of completing the negotiations associated with the purchase of a material project and associated capital raising".
According to the media reports, the acquisition of the Crown deposit would amount to $29 million, which would be regarded as material to Forge, with a capitalisation of $28.9 million, but not to Lynas, which is capitalised at $3.5 billion.
Forge shares last traded for $1.40 while Lynas shares were up four cents, or 1.91 per cent, to $2.14 at 7.30am.
Forge chairman Nick Curtis also is chairman of Lynas.
