I agree you can't deal with fundamentalists. And the Bush team are fundamentalists themselves, in a different way. They model simple solutions to complex problems. There is another good article in the NY Times that calls Wolfowitz a utopian: "Colin Powell's chief of staff, Larry Wilkerson, tells GQ magazine that Wolfie is "a utopian" like Lenin: "You're never going to bring utopia, and you're going to hurt a lot of people in the process of trying to do it."
