Friedland lauds Philippines
Thursday, February 10, 2005 ROBERT Friedland has reportedly taken a shine to the resource potential of the Philippines and is "aggressively pursuing" additional opportunities in the mineral rich country.
According to Canada Business News Friedland spoke "from the heart" about the potential of the Philippines to be a major supplier of metals to China at a recent conference in Manilla.
"The Chinese dragon has a fire in its belly and the only thing that can quench it is metals," Friedland said.
In January Friedland's Ivanhoe Mines entered into an agreement with the Philippines largest resource companies. Ivanhoe gained priority negotiation rights to the projects of Philippines gold producer Lepanto Consolidated Mining Co in return for a $3 million loan.
Prior to the agreement he met with President Gloria Arroyo who is trying to revive the mining industry in the country.
Friedland is no stranger to operating in jurisdictions generally perceived as difficult, having also being involved over the years in countries like Myanmar, Sierra Leone and Angola.
