What is the state of the human world, it is a relative state, good / evil - rich / poor - old / young - sinner / saint, so the Tree of Good and Evil is obviously not a literal tree, because trees are just trees, neither good, nor evil. So this tree must be a metaphor for something, the human world.
Jesus did overcome death. The truth of Jesus, the total purpose of His life was to impart a Teaching which would lead others to God. For this He gave His life. After He was put to death His Teachings reemerged stronger than every until they swept across the world to produce the most numerous religion on earth. That is overcoming death on the grandest scale possible.

Well, Eastern philosophy is rich is gems of wisdom. Christianity is a Middle-eastern philosophy also rich is gems of wisdom. Truth is good no matter the source.
