Because religion is not an individual undertaking. God moves the masses, not the individual, sure the individual gains a great deal and individuals can have a dramatic effect on the masses, but with true understanding that individual returns to the people and gathers like-minded people to move society forward.

Now I'm not suggesting you join a denomination because Christianity, Islam, etc are no longer functional religions, by that I mean the divine inspiration of God no longer shines on them. Every religion is given a span of time to have its influence and this is generally about a thousand years. Today they are belief systems marking time and as such they will have very little influence on the development of the human landscape and body politic going forward.
