You can't pay by bpay without a reference number and there is also a check digit to make sure the reference number is correct.
It is cheaper and faster to use bpay by far that's why practically every other company uses it. A lot of people don't even have a cheque book. They have to go and queue up at the bank to buy one. How antiquated.
