Historically, US shale has been the playground of the smaller company, with the smaller associated balance sheet and finance. Hence, short-cuts and less than industry best practice was the norm, leading to a less than perfect outcome. However, beyond the past these small(er) players have beyond reasonable doubt proven the efficacy and feasibility of shale gas extraction.
Now is a period of change from smaller players exiting (with cash bonus) and the entry of larger oil and gas majors. With the entry of majors, they bring their experience, regulatory compliance and best-practice techniques.
Fraccing gets better, economics improves and the sector is more professional. The benefits of US shale and shale to the world mean they will surpass any environmental concerns.
It will go ahead, but it won't flood the world with gas.
I work in associated industries (just waiting for UK Blackpool shale to kick off and the £ to get a dose of Dutch disease)
I still buy WPL and energy in general.
