I agree Nathan...personally I wouldn't move there with less than $2000 a month and $100k set aside for medical emergencies. The $2000 takes in a reasonable western lifestyle, some extra money for local and regional travel...rock fever can set in otherwise..., and lot's of dining out and enjoying yourself.
The medical situation there is pretty dismal too. Most people with any talent in the field have left to work or migrate overseas. The local provincial hospitals are hopeless, get really sick you might as well bring your coffin along at admissions. The better private ones in Manila, Cebu aren't cheap....but you have some hope of getting competently treated.
