I think there seems to be a confusion between Ponzi & Pyramid Schemes. Going by what people accuse Crowd1 (not EM1) of, it sounds like Pyramid Scheme is closer to what they are implying.

Also, this is where it does matter what the value or service offered for the investment is.
"Some pyramid scheme promoters disguise their true purpose by introducing products that are overpriced, of poor quality, difficult to sell or of little value. Making money out of recruitment is still their main aim."
