A patent is worthless by itself: it is only worth the revenue that the associated invention brings in.
There are US patents for antigravity machines so just having a patent doesn't mean that the invention is actually worth anything.
Many patent officers hold the view that if a patent describes a worthless invention, nobody will bother copying it anyway, so no harm granting it.
