I don't think the girl was out of line at all in asking for shoes to come off before entering the temple, and the only temples I have seen (not mosques)in Thailand are Budhist temples. The piles of shoes at the entrance to such a temple would be evidence enough that the wearing of shoes inside was a no no, as it is for inside any house in Thailand. Most people are very respectful of these rules and would observe them wherever they are in the world. Some people are very in your face about their lack of respect for any relegion other than their own.
