Whilst those diggers on the front line in the battle have not been recognised as much as they would have liked, the truly forgotten ones are those who provided support and actually won the battle, specificially the artillery unit at Nui dat whose fire along with support from NZ and US artillery units, heavy concentrated fire from a total of over 20 guns, actually caused the devastating losses to the enemy and saved the day for the diggers on the ground. Whilst the contribution of the artillery is mentioned in passing in most stories, their numbers are not included in totals of troops involved, yet in reality it was more of a battle between the Vietnamese in the plantation and the artillery in order to save the patrol from being completely over run.
I am not demeaning the bravery of those on the patrol, but I do feel that the true "heros" of the day, the artillery units, are not being given sufficient credit for the outcome, creating misconceptions in the minds of the public.
