Prominent Australia businessman Richard Pratt has died of prostate cancer.

The 74-year-old had been suffering from prostate cancer and last week his family described him as "gravely ill".

On Monday, federal prosecutors discontinued their criminal case against Mr Pratt, saying it was not in the public interest to continue the case because he was terminally ill.

Mr Pratt was accused of lying to Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) hearings about collusion in the cardboard box industry.

A constant stream of prominent personalities, including politicians, football players and businessmen have visited the home of the Visy boss over the past days to pay their respects.

The 74-year-old leaves behind wife Jeanne, son Anthony, daughters Heloise and Fiona and grandchildren.

Victorian Premier John Brumby has described the self-made businessman and prominent philanthropist as a great Victorian and a great Australian, who came to this country and made a lot of it, building a huge business.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says her thoughts were with the Pratt family.

The Carlton Football Club has also expressed its sorrow.

Mr Pratt is credited with bringing Carlton back from the brink of ruin in 2007.

Coach Brett Ratten and several Carlton players visited Mr Pratt and his family today.
