I hear tell (no pun) that Thales are busy building a new weapon, partly based on the old SLR, i.e gas operated piston reloading,this is a more reliable system, as it doesn't allow anywhere near the same amount of burnt propellant residue into the slide and bolt, I believe it will be 6.8mm which is a compromise between the Steyr 5.56 and the SLR 7.62mm, possibly with a cold forged cobalt steel barrel for much better heat and wear and tear properties?

And maybe one that can fire repeatedly with Hyperburst rounds?
