He was lucky alright. Thanks ACB. I think it must have happened around 4am. Nothing untowards like poisoning I don't think. I've never owned a cat that has naturally died. Always put them down. I had an old Boxer that died on the beach once. He fell down, became unconscious, I ran to him and his heart was racing then slowed down to nothing. Just carried him up to the car and put him in the boot.
Some are lucky. Some of us are dead before we hit the ground. Only way to go.
