MB might want to use a different kind of battery, because the business model allows automakers to retain ownership over the batteries. That frees up MB to pick a different type of battery chemistry, if they want to. It might mean making adjustments in the Hub & how it operates.
It doesn't affect RIL, the tech works with your standard, everyday lithium-ion battery & others, out in the current marketplace.
Plus, considering NMT is invested here as well, I doubt they would allow the tech to become obsolete. I assume with any type of new battery, the formula used to recycle them would be passed over to RIL.
