Times are changing though - the grid as we know it will likely transform into localised mini grids, solar will become more commonplace and many of us will run our houses and cars from what we can produce from our own solar supplies. People like being green, sure, but people like saving money more (generally!) - it will be economics that drives the mass EV and solar adoption... The nice side effect of this will be cleaner energy production and cleaner air in built up areas.
The long tailpipe theory is very complex. The "expert" example about the diesel vehicle running for 8 years seems to be a grossly oversimplified case of equating the impact of producing an EV battery pack with fuel burning; but does it mean anything in the relevant context of EV vs ICE vehicle?!?! Probably not. Sneaky. Interesting but easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. Taking both cases back to the very beginning would indeed be very interesting but insanely difficult to do properly. Those companies marketing EVs may do it... But then again, why bother when they can (soon) just say "it's cheaper!"
For most people, a huge portion of their EV charging can and will be done at home overnight. This is fantastic as it allows the user to control how that electricity is generated. Put in a decent size solar system with home storage and your EV isn't powered by some power station down the road. The big ball in the sky will do it via your roof. Soon, it will make better economic sense to do all this than to continue paying electricity bills and fuel bills. That is when things get serious in this space. When economics jumps in the driver's seat, there is no stopping it.
Hold onto your lithium shares as this all unfolds and you'll be mighty glad that you did!
Exciting times!
Imo DYOR
Cheers
