The composition of earnings by commodity changes every year as prices and production volumes fluctuate. But in recent years the biggest earners have been iron ore and copper. However its been said their iron ore earnings are of a higher quality. One presentation I saw (on Fortescue's site, some time ago) said that RIO's iron ore division was worth something like 50% of its market cap. I personally believe that iron ore is RIO's most important and most valuable division by a wide margin.
