There is little recognition of the huge advantage, low rainfall gives the Australian mining industry. Most mining and primary processing produces very large quantities of sludge which generally has the adjective "toxic" added to the noun "sludge". Whatever you think of the green sledging of the mining industry, the management of vast quantities of semi-liquid sludge is a huge problem in any area where the rainfall exceeds the rate of evaporation. The problem is very much less in areas where the reverse is the case. That is most of Australia. We only have to look at the huge problem BHP and its partners have in Brasil, where their activities have resulted in hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars damage. Australia has a huge advantage in this regard which, I think, is not well appreciated by the market.
