The reason for the difference in price movements is predominantly due to the Aussie dollar fluctuations. This means stocks that have dual listings such as RIO and BHP are cheaper overseas because of our rising dollar. This has a similar effect on the overall market. For example, you may notice that the DOW and S&P go up 1% overnight and our market follows only .5% if our dollar also rises .5% (not exact calculations, but you get the point).
