Riots in Congo's mineral rich North Kivu province brought business to a standstill on Monday as rioters attacked installations of the U.N. observer mission in Congo, or MONUC, which they say is doing little to end the insurgency, mineral dealers said Monday.
A mineral dealer in Goma, North Kivu's provincial capital, told Dow Jones Newswires that rioters attacked MONUC headquarters in Goma, and that business in the capital has virtually come to a standstill as traders fear escalating violence.
"All mineral buying centers are closed" he said. There are 28 mineral buying depots in Goam dealing in minerals like tin, gold and coltan.
