I am sure Jeginton was just being sarcastic. I work in equities as well and they are not called "bots". In the equities market they are referred to as "algo" or "algos" in plural form. As in short for algorithmic trading. They are not used to manipulate price movements but to minimise market impact costs for the volume that needs to be moved on-market in a more sophisticated and automated way.
The term "bots" seems to be a unique HotCopper slang for "algos".
I am sure Jeginton was just being sarcastic. I work in equities...
