Thanks for your response sputnick. As an amateur in stocks I obviously used the wrong word when I mentioned shorting. What I have observed is the raising or lowering of stock prices by taking out outstanding lots. The end result seems to be the share price gets lower and lower as what appears to be manipulation progresses. It's not just Sma. So what I call shorting (obviously erroneously) is the gradual reduction of the share price by what appear to be computer driven buys and sells. Obviously what I have described is the operation of the share market but it does seem to be a reason why small caps are getting hammered.
