If you were Rittenhouse and were in a large crowd (with a concealed weapon) and shots were fired by a person with an assault rifle, who you then saw was running around wildly, how you you react?

If Kyle was in fact yet another of America's disillusioned teens going on a rampage, then shooting him before he takes more innocent lives would make you a national hero. How was Rittenhouse to know he wasn't and therefore surely he could have shot Kyle and used 'self defence' as a defence?

It literally takes two seconds to go from inactive to active shooter.

It is easy to see video after and make a judgement. Not so much with the panic and chaos in the heat of the moment. They didn't have the benefit of knowing his background or motive. Especially Rittenhouse, as people had already been killed by Kyle. The assumption that he was a killer, at the time, would be a logical one.

These things unfold quickly and what I was saying from that paragraph is that none of this would even be a conversation if Kyle wasn't walking around with a loaded assault rifle on show in the first place.

The fact he could is where the legal system failed them all.
